It would be hard to find someone who isn’t a fan of fried potatoes in some form. And I’m sure many of those same people love a good tater tot. So let’s give the people what they want!
This Sweet Potato Tater Tot recipe is simple but totally worth the effort. You can serve them us as an appetizer, a snack, or freeze them until your next game day celebration.
The recipe…
The steps to making these Sweet Potato Tater Tots are pretty simple. Start by boiling some peeled sweet potatoes until they are just turning soft, but not all the way cooked through.
Drain the water from the potatoes and pat dry. Then grate the potatoes. I like the grate instead of mash because I think it gives a better texture. Add your herbs and spices, then pour in the olive oil. The mixture should be sticky at this point, allowing you to form tater tots.
To get the cone shape, just press a tablespoon worth of batter into the palm of your hands and roll to shape.
Finally, brush the tater tots with some olive oil and bake! Once done, garnish with some flaky sea salt and try your best not to devour these in one sitting.

Sweet Potato Tater Tots
Ingredients
- 2 lb peeled sweet potatoes
- 3 tbsp AP flour
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp olive olive
- salt + flaky sea salt for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450℉.
- Add parchment paper to a large baking sheet.
- Add 4 cups of water to a large pot with a lid and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add peeled sweet potatoes to the water along with a pinch of salt. Cook for 10-12 minutes, until sweet potatoes are about 2/3 of the way cooked. They should still be firm if you poke a fork through them.
- Remove sweet potatoes from the water and allow them to cool. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl then use a grater to finely grate. Add the flour, paprika, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Mix until combined. The mixture should be moist and sticky.
- Use a tablespoon measure to scoop the potato mix from the bowl. Place the mixture in the middle of your palm, then make a fist and press down firmly until the mixture sticks together into a long cone shape. Shape the mixture into the shape of a tater tot and place on the prepared baking sheet. The shape does not have to be perfect! Just have fun. Repeat with the remaining mixture.
- Once done, lightly brush the tater tots with the remaining olive oil. Bake for 15 minutes per side, for a total of 30 minutes. Use a spatula to gently flip the tater tots, as they will be fragile. Once done, the tater tots should be crisp and golden brown. Allow the tots to cool and firm up. Serve with your favorite condiments.
