Sometimes the best recipes are also the simplest. This Guava and Cheese Pastry is made with just 3 ingredients, but packs a ton of flavor!
I try to feature a mix of easy and intermediate recipes on the blog, just to make sure there is something for everyone. This 3-ingredient recipe is the definition of easy!
This recipe is by no means an original, people have been combining guava paste and cheese into flavorful empanadas or hand pies for decades. Guavas are (unsurprisingly) the fruit of the tropical guava tree. Depending on the variety, guavas can be white or pink on the inside. They have a very unique taste, partly because of the many seeds located inside the fruit. Guavas also have many health benefits because they are high in antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber.
Guava paste is a super concentrated, super sweet substance that honestly doesn’t taste very much like a fresh guava. But it’s still delicious! In America, its hard to get perfectly ripe fresh guava, so I usually have to resort to buying the concentrate and blending it to make drinks, or buying guava paste and making the guava and cheese pastry recipe featured here today.
The recipe…
Making these guava and cheese pastries is as easy as 1-2-3. First, thaw puff pastry sheets and cut them into small squares. Second, scoop generous amounts of guava paste onto one puff pastry square, layer on your favorite cheese (I like to use Manchego cheese for this).
Then, top with another puff pastry square. Finally, seal the edges using water or egg wash and crimp the edges with a fork before baking for 20-25 minutes.
That’s all there is to it!
