Hey all,
Got another great one for you all. These Spiced Papaya Tostadas look fancy, but *secret* they are so easy to make! This meatless meal comes together in less than 15 minutes, and doesn’t require any cooking time. Given how easy these are to make, it’s almost laughable how delicious they are! Read on for the recipe.
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ll know that I’ve been obsessing over brunch food lately. I’ve been spending the past few weeks thinking up some new brunch recipes that combine flavors from my Caribbean background in new and interesting ways. The result? This recipe. It’s a meatless marvel staring one of my mom’s favorite fruits: the papaya. If you have never had a papaya before, the taste is a bit hard to explain. A Caribbean “red” papaya has a deep orange color and when ripe, it’s soft and juicy. But the papaya’s flavor is relatively mild. So for this recipe, I amped up the flavors by seasoning the papaya with chili powder, paprika, lime, and sugar.
The next star of this dish is the blue corn tortilla. I was inspired by Mexico for this part of the dish. If you are ambitious, you can make your own tortilla out of blue masa flour. But I wasn’t THAT ambitious, at least not today 😀 High quality premade tortillas work wonders as well. To get the perfect char on the tortillas without a bunch of fat and grease, I toasted the tortillas on my gas stove for a few minutes.
I topped the tostadas with cream cheese, the seasoned papaya mixture, fresh avocado, and some sliced chili peppers. Together, these fresh, simple ingredients make a really unique dish that is unlike anything else you’ve probably ever tasted before. If I ever open up a restaurant, this would definitely be on the menu as a signature dish!

Spiced Papaya Tostadas
Ingredients
Spiced Papaya
- 1 ripe papaya
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp ground paprika
- 1 tbsp organic cane sugar
- juice of one lime
- salt to taste
Tostadas
- 4 blue corn tortillas
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/4 red onion sliced
- 1 red chili pepper small
- 1 green chili pepper small
- sunflower sprouts optional
Instructions
- To prepare the spiced papaya, cut papaya in half and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds. Peel the papaya and chop into 1/2 inch cubes. Add chili powder, paprika, lime juice, sugar, and salt. Stir to combine. Store in fridge while you toast the tortillas.
- Toast the blue corn tortillas one at a time over open flame. Keep the flame on low and remove the tortillas once the edges begin to char.
- Smear a spoonfull of cream cheese (or spread of choice) onto each tortilla, starting in the middle and working outwards in a circular motion. Add a large spoonful of the papaya mixture, then top with freshly sliced avocado, peppers, onion, and sunflower sprouts. Serve immediately.

I used half a papaya which was almost too much for four tostada shells. I halved the seasonings and then topped with cream cheese, the spiced papaya, and finely chopped serrano only. The creamy, spicy, sweet combo was AMAZING. So thankful for sites like yours to try new food combinations. Will definitely make again!
Oh, and I just made my own baked tostadas with Isabel Eats’ recipe. Cheap and easy!
So glad to hear it Meredith!
